Depression: How Can CBD Help You?

Depression: How Can CBD Help You?

On the occasion of the World Day Against Depression, which is celebrated every January 13 with the aim of raising awareness about this disease, we explain what it consists of, its causes and symptoms and how CBD (cannabidiol) can act as support in its treatment.

What is depression and what are its symptoms?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines depression as a frequent mental disorder, characterized by the presence of sadness and low spirits (hence its name), loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or lack of self-esteem, disorders sleep or appetite, feeling tired and poor concentration.

It can affect anyone, and be temporary or chronic.

What are the causes of depression?

Depression is caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain (usually serotonin, the so-called happiness hormone), which can be caused by genetic, biological or environmental factors.

CBD as a support in the treatment of depression

The treatment of depression is based on a combination of psychotherapy or talk therapy and antidepressant drugs. Physical exercise and meditation are also recommended to promote serotonin production and eliminate anxiety.

Although CBD does not completely cure depression, it has been observed that it has properties that place it as a good ally in its treatment, being able to achieve effects such as those of the aforementioned therapies and activities.

As we have discussed previously, depression causes sleep disturbances, poor appetite and low spirits, and it has been appreciated that CBD, by interacting with the Endocannabinoid System (SEC), acts on basic functions such as sleep, appetite and state. of spirit.

Likewise, when a person suffers from depression, their hippocampus (a brain structure located in the temporal lobe) is reduced, so also the functions that this part controls (hunger, sexual desire, care, control of feelings of anger, fear or pleasure …).

CBD in these cases would promote neurogenesis and the release of anandamide, a substance that contributes to the production of serotonin.

Beyond this, in 2014, a study in animal models (rodents) validated the antidepressant and anxiolytic properties of CBD, since those to whom it was given, presented significantly lower levels of depression and anxiety.

Finally, it should be noted that unlike THC, this cannabinoid is not psychotropic, that is, it does not produce unwanted effects on the central nervous system and although its study is still in its early stages, there are more and more products and formats for its consumption.
