The terpenes of marijuana, also known as terpenoids, are aromatic compounds of natural origin present in the Cannabis plant, among other species. These are basically basic hydrocarbons included in plants and some call them simply essential oils, since they come from the resin glazes of the flower.

What are the most present terpenes in the Cannabis plant?

Cannabis terpenes reach approximately 120, however the most important are the following:

  1. Limonene: Limonene is a monoterpene responsible for the perfume of citrus fruits. It has an orange aroma and is used for food and perfumery. In addition, it is used in alternative medicine, since among its main properties we highlight that it reduces heartburn and gastric acid reflux.
  2. Myrcene: It is the most abundant terpene in Cannabis (60% of the essential oil of some species). We can also find it in other plants such as verbena, citronella, hops, ylang-ylang, thyme and bay leaf. It adds green aroma to hops that are used in craft beers that are made using the dry-hooping technique (the hops are added after fermentation). Its aroma is metallic, resinous and herbal.
  3. Pinene: It occurs naturally within the Cannabis plant in an amount that is around 30% of the volume of terpenes in marijuana. It can also be found in conifers, sage, eucalyptus, mugwort, and olive oil. It is believed to be used by plants as a natural herbicide, as it prevents other species from competing with them for natural resources.

It is one of the best known Cannabis terpenes, recommended in people who undergo chemotherapy for cancer, mainly breast, lung and stomach. Limonene is used as a natural solvent in cleaning products and as a flavor enhancer in some Cannabis extracts.

What medicinal uses can Myrcene have?

In its medicinal uses, myrcene is used to treat diarrhea, hypertension, and diabetes. It also has analgesic effects and in combination with limonene sedative and relaxing of the locomotor system.

Regarding its medicinal uses, we can highlight that it is a powerful anxiolytic, which reduces anxiety and calms stress. It also has effects on motor movements. In addition to the four terpenes in marijuana that we indicated above, we can find other important ones: eucalyptol, phytol, G-terpinene, nerolidol, B-caryophyllene, eudesmol and guaiol.
