Glaucoma: Can CBD and CBN Help?

Cannabinoids, such as CBD (cannabidol) and CBN (cannabinol) have various properties that can bring health benefits to different parts of our body. On World Sight Day, which is celebrated every second Thursday in October, we will talk about glaucoma, a serious disease that affects more than 1.5% of the total population, and how CBD and CBN can contribute to your treatment.

What is glaucoma and why does it occur?

The word glaucoma derives from the Greek word Glaukos, which originally meant glowing, and later, blue or grayish-green and which refers to the coloration of the iris that causes this disease.

Glaucoma is a chronic eye condition in which the fibers of the optic nerve are damaged, causing loss of vision.

The fibers of the optic nerve are damaged when there is an increase in intraocular pressure, caused by poor drainage of the aqueous humor, which is located in the anterior part of the eye, and which is responsible for nourishing the eyeball.

What are the factors that increase the risk of suffering from it?

Although glaucoma can affect everyone, regardless of race, gender, or age, the people most at risk of developing it are:

  • Over 60 years old.
  • Hispanic or African, people with this ancestry.
  • People with a family history of glaucoma.
  • Nearsighted people.
  • Diabetics
  • Steroid users.

What are its symptoms and its effects?

The development of glaucoma is progressive and gradual, therefore, it may be that in the beginning the glaucoma does not present evident symptoms, until the disease has advanced a lot and blindness occurs. In some cases, the following complaints may occur:

  • Blurry vision.
  • Headache and eyes.
  • Nausea and / or vomiting.
  • Eye redness
  • Photophobia and the appearance of rainbow halos around the light beams.
  • Sudden loss of vision

How can CBD and CBN help with glaucoma?

Various studies have found that both cannabidol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN) contribute to the reduction of high eye pressure, the cause of glaucoma. In addition, these cannabinoids have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiemetic properties, being beneficial to improve and reduce inflammation, pain and nausea.

How to use CBD and CBN in cases of glaucoma?

Our endocannabinoid system, a system that acts as a nervous messenger and participates in functions such as the control of mood, sleep, appetite or immune activity, has cannabinoid receptors throughout our body, including in part of the ocular tissue, in charge of controlling eye pressure.

In the eyes, significant amounts of CB1 receptors are found, which, by binding with these cannabinoids, can protect the cells of the retina and have a positive effect in these cases.
