CBN: What is it and what are its effects?

We have already told you about THC and CBD, some of the compounds in cannabis, as well as their characteristics and various properties and effects on health, so today we are going to introduce you to another of its compounds, much less popular, CBN, or cannabinol.

What is CBN and how is it formed and extracted?

CBN, or cannabinol, is one of approximately 113 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, and is found in minute amounts (less than 1%) in the growing or freshly harvested plant.

Unlike other cannabinoids, CBN does not develop from cannabigerolic acid (CGBA), but rather is a metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), i.e. CBN is created when THC is heated or exposed to oxygen (for example, when it ages and the THC oxidizes).

Due to its limited amount in the plant (before the cannabis matures) it is more difficult to extract than other cannabinoids.

The CBN on the SEC

CBN, like other cannabinoids, chemically binds to the cannabinoid receptors of our endocannabinoid system (ECS), a kind of nervous “messenger network” that is involved in various bodily functions, such as mood control, the immune system , appetite, sleep, sensitivity to pain etc. Although its affinity is not very high with either the CB1 receptor or the CB2 receptor, it is higher with the CB2.

Despite being a derivative of THC, with a recognized psychotropic effect, CBN, like CBD, does not produce these effects, such as euphoria or intoxication. However, in very high doses (higher than its medicinal use), it could cause tiredness and dizziness.

Properties of CBN for health

Although CBN is a little-known cannabinoid and the studies around it are still in preliminary stages, a series of properties of cannabinol have been observed that may be practical at a medicinal level, such as:

  • Antibacterial.
  • Anti-inflammatory.
  • Analgesic.
  • Sedative.
  • Anticonvulsant.
  • Antiemetic.

Some of the health benefits are facilitating the reduction of intraocular pressure (as in glaucoma), reduction of excessive skin cell growth, reduction of inflammation and pain (as in rheumatoid arthritis). ), increased bone growth, increased appetite and food intake and delay the onset and development of neurodegenerative diseases.

Like other cannabinoids, such as CBD, also used medicinally for its properties, although supply is still limited, CBN can be found in various formats, such as oils, capsules or ointments.
