CBD, CBG and skin disorders

The skin is the largest organ in the body, acting as a first barrier against any element that threatens to enter the body. Being so exposed can cause it to become damaged or degenerate, but it can also make you sick from internal reasons.

Today we will talk about why the main skin disorders occur and how cannabinoids such as CBD or CBG can be of help in their treatment.

What are the main skin disorders and what are their main causes?

There are multiple diseases and skin lesions, however, the most common are eczema (or dermatitis), psoriasis, and acne.

These problems have different causes, for example, eczema can have an allergic or contact tendency (it can be contagious), while psoriasis is considered an autoimmune disease, that is, resulting from a malfunction of the immune system.

Beyond this, the main factors, environmental, behavioral, or genetic, that can cause or aggravate skin disorders are the following:

  • Obesity.
  • Stress.
  • Poor diet.
  • Pollution.
  • Smoking
  • Alcoholism.
  • Hormonal changes.
  • Certain drugs.
  • Changes in weather (especially changes in humidity).
  • A weakened immune system.

How can cannabinoids help in these cases?

Before talking about cannabinoids, we will talk about what processes occur in these cases. Skin problems are an effect of an inflammatory response of the immune system.

This response occurs when the level of blood plasma and immune cells increases, blood circulation to tissues increases, and the characteristic swelling, redness, and itchiness occurs, due to stimulation of nerve endings.

CBD and CBG are non-psychotropic cannabinoids with a recognized anti-inflammatory effect. A 2010 study found that they reduced inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, which is why they are highly valued in this area, and are even beginning to be included in cosmetic products.

However, their anti-inflammatory effect is not the only point in favor of these cannabinoids when it comes to the skin.

These cannabinoids also promote cell proliferation and differentiation due to their antioxidant and nutritional potential, and are used in anti-aging creams.

They also inhibit the overactivity of the sebaceous glands, reducing sebum production, and also have antibacterial potential. These glands are the cause of acne, a very widespread problem with not only physical but also psychological effects, and bacteria on the skin can aggravate the problem.

Finally, an investigation from the University of Colorado discovered that they have an anti-itch effect, since itching is a very common problem in these cases.

Although the study of cannabinoids is still incipient, as well as its commercialization, more and more forms of consumption are being developed, for example, the topic.
